What Is Local SEO? A Practical Definition for Local Businesses
What is local SEO?
Local SEO is the practice of optimizing a website and related listings — most importantly a Google Business Profile — so a business appears in search results for people searching within a specific city or area, rather than competing for broad, location-independent search terms.
If your business serves customers in a specific city or region, “SEO” in the general sense isn’t really what you need — you need local SEO, which is a distinct discipline with its own priorities.
The core difference from general SEO
General SEO optimizes for visibility across the broadest possible audience for a topic. Local SEO optimizes for visibility among people searching near a specific location — “plumber near me,” “dentist in [city],” “best restaurant [neighborhood].” The intent is different, and so is the optimization.
The three pillars of local SEO
1. A correctly configured Google Business Profile. For most local searches, this is what appears before your website does — in the local map pack and in Maps results. Business name, category, services, hours, and photos all need to be accurate and complete.
2. A website structured around location and services. Pages that clearly state what you do and where you do it, rather than a single vague “services” page, give search engines — and visitors — the specific signals they need.
3. Consistency across the web. The same business name, address, and phone number on your website, your Google Business Profile, and any other listings reinforces legitimacy. Inconsistent information does the opposite.
What local SEO is not
It’s not a switch you flip once. It’s not exclusively about your Google Business Profile — a profile without a solid website behind it, or a website without a connected profile, both underperform compared to the two working together. And it’s not something anyone can legitimately guarantee a specific ranking position for — too many factors are outside any single party’s control.
Why it matters more for local businesses than most people realize
A plumber, a dentist, and a restaurant are not competing nationally. They’re competing within a radius of a few miles against a handful of real competitors. Local SEO is what determines whether a business is even in the running for those nearby searches — everything else about the website matters only after that visibility exists.
