The Complete Guide to Setting Up a Google Business Profile
What information does a Google Business Profile need to be effective?
An effective Google Business Profile needs an accurate business name, the correct primary and secondary categories, a complete and specific service list, correct hours, real photos, and a link to a working website — configured to match how customers actually search, not left at default settings.
A Google Business Profile is free, but “free” doesn’t mean “set it and forget it.” A profile filled in with defaults and never touched again performs very differently from one that’s actually configured correctly.
Business name: accurate, not stuffed
Use your actual business name. Adding extra keywords to your listed name to try to rank for more searches violates Google’s guidelines and can get a profile suspended — a real risk that isn’t worth the short-term visibility.
Categories: specific, not just broad
Google Business Profile allows a primary category and several secondary ones. Choosing the most specific accurate category — “Emergency Plumber” rather than just “Plumber,” if that’s genuinely your focus — helps match the profile to the right searches.
Services: complete, not partial
Listing every service you actually offer, described specifically, gives Google more signal to match your profile to relevant searches — and gives potential customers a faster answer to “do they do what I need?”
Photos: real, current, and enough of them
Profiles with recent, genuine photos read as more active and trustworthy than ones with a single old photo or none at all. This applies to the storefront, the team, and the work itself where relevant.
Hours: accurate, especially around holidays
Nothing damages trust faster than a customer showing up during posted hours to find the business closed. Keeping hours current, including holiday exceptions, protects both the customer experience and the credibility of the listing.
Connect it to a real website
A profile without a linked website misses an entire layer of detail a listing format can’t hold — full service descriptions, photos, and a proper contact path. The two are meant to work together, not substitute for each other.
What we don’t do
We don’t promise a specific ranking position, and no one legitimately can — Google’s local ranking factors include signals outside any one party’s control. What’s controllable is making sure the profile itself is complete, accurate, and correctly connected to your website, which is exactly what proper setup accomplishes.
